Post-Baccalaureate Research Experiences for LSAMP Students (PRELS)

The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program is aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of students successfully completing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree programs, and increasing the number of students interested in, academically qualified for, and matriculating into programs of graduate study

Post-Baccalaureate Research Experiences for LSAMP Students

Under the auspices of the University System of Maryland and the National Science Foundation, the University of Maryland, College Park Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation Post-Baccalaureate Research Experiences for LSAMP Students (PRELS) is committed to:

  • Assist universities and colleges in diversifying the nation's STEM workforce by increasing the number of STEM baccalaureate and graduate degrees awarded to populations underrepresented in STEM disciplines
  • Fostering a diverse and interactive science community
  • Encouraging undergraduate research
  • Candidates were active and in good standing as participants in LSAMP programs as undergraduates,
  • Candidates who earned a baccalaureate degree in STEM awarded no more than 24 months prior to being selected for this funding opportunity,
  • Candidates are not currently enrolled in another degree program
  • Candidates intend to apply to graduate programs or jobs in the STEM workforce during or immediately following completion of participation in PRELS.
  1. Personal Essay Statement (500 words max.): Why should you be chosen as an LSAMP PRELS participant? What are your expectations of the program? What are your academic and career goals, and how can the LSAMP PRELS Program help you accomplish your goals?
  2. Research Interests Statement (500 words max.): If you could conduct research in any area or on any topic, what would you choose? Include your motivation behind doing this research, how you would go about executing the research, and how this research would contribute to the scientific community? 
  3. Two Letters of Recommendation: Each recommendation must be submitted separately from the online application by the recommender using the following link: Recommendation Form
  4. Resume
  5. Unofficial Transcript
  6. Citizenship documentation (one of the following: Copy of US Birth Certificate, US Passport, or US Permanent Residency Card)

Stipend Provided
Separate funding for travel, research, and professional development
