Transfer Student Criteria for All Majors

There are two types of transfer students: internal (meaning current UMCP students) and external (meaning non-UMCP students from in or out of state). Transfer students are directly admitted to the Clark School on a space available basis if they:

  • meet the Gateway requirements, MATH 141, PHYS 161, and CHEM 113 or CHEM 135 with a grade of 2.0 or better,
  • have completed Fundamental Studies English,
  • have completed at least one Distributive Studies course from the humanities or social sciences,
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and
  • have not previously been admitted to the Clark School of Engineering.

Students interested in bioengineering have an additional requirement. All transfer students (including internal Clark School transfers, external UMD transfers, and outside institution transfers, but NOT first time freshmen) must complete BIOE 120 with a 3.0 or better.  Any student, regardless of major or academic record is welcome to take this class.  Students must e-mail the bioengineering academic coordinator (mfrench@umd.edu) and request permission.

Only one repeat of a single course in the set of Gateway courses, either at the University of Maryland or at any other University or College, is allowed. A course in which the student receives a grade of 'W' (Withdraw) is counted as an attempt.

Students with transfer credits from other institutions are encouraged to visit the university's Transfer Credit Center, which facilitates the evaluation of transfer credits and provides information on those course equivalencies, credit reports, and articulation tables.
